Project HEAL
Project HEAL is funded by the Community Clinics Initiative,
a joint project of the Tides Foundation and the California Endowment.

HOME: ABOUT US

Project-HEALHealth, Education, Advocacy, Leadership – focuses on grass roots community organizing within Los Angeles County's medically underserved areas of East Los Angeles, El Monte, Pico Rivera, Boyle Heights, Lynwood and Bell. Project-HEAL is funded by the Community Clinics Initiative, a joint project of the Tides Foundation and the California Endowment. Working with our consumer board members and local residents, AltaMed’s Government Affairs Department will conduct focus groups, participatory research, data collection and report the findings to community partners and policymakers at the local, state and federal levels of government.

We strive to address health care and environmental issues that adversely affect residents living within these underserved areas, including asthma, diabetes, obesity, HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, tobacco), coronary diseases, as well as air and water quality. Project-HEAL will also work to enhance civic participation and voter's registration. Project-HEAL will be directly supervised by AltaMed’s Government Affairs leadership team that has over 40 combined years of professional experience in the area of healthcare and grassroots advocacy.

We recognize the forces behind healthcare disparities include poor socio-economic status, lack of knowledge to prevent or manage diseases, lack of access to affordable quality healthcare, lack of healthcare insurance coverage, and cultural norms as well as behavior.

Project HEAL will provide the tools necessary to members of the communities in order to advocate for change. Project HEAL is classic grassroots organizing because it seeks to build community groups, develop new leadership where none existed, and otherwise organize the unorganized. It is a values based process where people are brought together to act in the interest of their communities and the common good. Project HEAL also seeks to empower the people directly involved and impacted by the issues being addressed.
